Leslie Robert Knight
From School to Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society
On his return from Burma in 1932, education became a
priority and Leslie won a scholarship to West Ham College of Engineering
following which he did an apprenticeship in Marine Engineering in the docks. His
work involved renewing the main pump impellors at Crossness sewage works instead
of making ship’s propellers which was his company’s usual line of work.
Later he joined Woolwich Arsenal engaged in the development of hand grenades;
served as an engineer in the RAF during the war years and then joined Frank
Whittle’s newly nationalised Power Jets company to assist in development of the
jet engine.
